TeamVRM.com's Roy Horton Has South Lites Toyota Arenacross Points Lead But Practice Crash Ends Title Hopes
1/15/2007
Shawn Clark
Waukesha, WI
(Jan. 14th, 2007) - Round four of the 2006/2007 Toyota AMA
Arenacross series continued Roy Horton string of main events. Horton put his TEAMVRM.com / Nielsen / Honda Oils machine into all four main events over the
weekend and came out of Charlotte with the Arenacross South points lead!
Unfortunately
it appears Roy will not be adding to his points lead this year as Roy was
injured in a practice crash prior to the Baltimore, MD race.
Friday Practice Get Off:
“The first night started out with
bang, literally! I had a big crash
early in practice, having to bail off mid air over the big finish line jump. I
got back to the pits, threw down an Unbound Energy and I was fortunate enough
to escape with just a lot of bruises and soreness and would be able to race
with some discomfort.”
Friday Lites:
“When it came to race, I did the
best I could do with how I felt. I
qualified 5th out the Lites heat straight into the main event, but
with a back row start.
In the Lites main event I suffering
a poor start and was able to work my way through the pack into the 5th
position. At the checkered flag the
running order was Neese, Green, Voit, McCabe, and Horton.”
Friday Arenacross:
“After a small tip over in the Arenacross
heat and failing to qualify from the heat race I came back to win the
Arenacross semi and secure a trip into the main event.
At the
start of the Arenacross main event I jumped out to a good start sneaking up the
inside from the back row while running a strong sixth place and looking to move
forward. I was side swiped from the
other side of the track as another rider lost control of his motorcycle in the
whoops and sent it straight for me. This was unfortunate, but once again I was
lucky to escape with no major problems.
This event stopped my main event and I wasn’t able to finish which put
me in 14th for the final standings.”
Saturday Qualifiers:
“Saturday was a new day; although I
was still very sore from Friday nights get offs. As always I was looking forward to a good night of racing. The Live Nation track crew gave us a great
and challenging track to race on. With the whoops being the best so far of the
year, the rhythm section as technical as they get and a great finish line there
was going to be some great racing in store. The day started just as I could
have hoped wining my Lites day time qualifier.”
Saturday Lites:
“Saturday was a new day, although I
was still very much sore, I was looking forward to a good night of racing. As
the Live Nation track crew gave us a perfect and challenging track to race on.
With the whoops being the best so far of the year, the rhythm section as
technical as they get and a great finish line there was going to be some great
racing in store. The day started just as I would have hoped wining my Lites
daytime qualifier!
After having the fastest heat in the
daytime and now having some new confidence rolling I went out and won my Lites
heat from start to finish.
Terrible reaction placed myself in
the back of the pack where there was lots of battling and stuffing coming from
all angles. The top 3 leaders ran away
with the show and after a hard fought race and a last turn block pass I ended
my Lites weekend with a 4th place finish, but more importantly the
points lead in the South Lites region!”
Saturday Arenacross:
“During the day I was battling it
out with Friday nights Lites winner in the 450 heat race setting things up for
a good night.
The Arenacross went a little
different as I did not qualify straight out of the heat, sending me to the semi
were I placed 2nd behind
Justin Buckelew and another trip to the main event.
Just as the night prior during the
holeshot in the Arenacross main event I was able to find a lane and sneak my
way into 4th from a back row start. After a pass by Keith Johnson I
was running a strong 5th as we were pulling away from the field and
feeling great. The 2nd half
of the race was a completely different story as when the halfway mark appeared
so did all my aches and pains of the weekend, I gritted my teeth and pushed on
but fading back to a disappointing 11th place finish.
All and it
was a good weekend with a month off from racing there was a little rust to be
knocked off this weekend, and I now looking forward to Baltimore where the
whole series will rejoin again and make for some awesome racing.”
Practice Crash Ends Horton’s South Region Title Hopes.
With
everything looking up for Roy he continued his weekly training schedule of
riding during the week. Roy sent his
mechanic to Baltimore as he stayed south to ride at Jim Neese’s track and then
planned to continue on to Baltimore after practice.
Unfortunately
Horton’s plans changed drastically as his 2006 practice bike malfunctioned and
caused him to crash on a triple jump.
Crashes are never fun and this was initially appears to have broken
Roy’s wrist and tore his ACL as the bike pulled his legs.
Roy is back
in Illinois and beginning his recovery and is in decent spirits considering his
disappointment. Roy stated, “We’ll I
guess the ACL will heal with the wrist.
I’m disappointed because things were really coming together for me. This not only hurts me but my current and
potential sponsors. I can’t wait to be
back.”
