The weekend went good, not the results I ultimately want to achieve, but a step in a good direction. The track crew built a very challenging track this weekend, with big steep whoops and very technical rhythm section.
Friday started off with a bang
in the 1st Lites heat of the night. I
pulled my first holeshot of the year and was off to the races leading every lap
of the heat and scoring the fastest heat and 1st gate pick to the line for the
main event. In the AX class, was another good race after starting 7th I put my
head down and pushed towards the front where Cory green, Keith Johnson and
myself had a terrific battle that almost put myself and Green on the ground on
the last lap. Keith went in for a block
pass sending him one way and Cory into me, we collided in the air both twisting
sideways but by some miracle both pulling it off with some of the
best saves of our careers and qualifying us straight to the main event,
while putting us on t he front page of the local newspaper the following
morning.
The main events Friday didn't
go as planned, after be picked by speed TV to win the Lites main event, it was
not to be after mid pack start I found myself in 7th after lap one and with
Shane Sewell and Cory Green out front riding good. I had my work cut out for me. I pushed from start to finish but
could only achieve a 4th place finish, which was disappointing after how the
night started.
The AX class was much of the
same when early in the race me and another local IL rider Tommy Hofmaster
hooked up early in the race. It put me
to the ground and ending my race, hopes early. In AX rubbing is racing, things
happen and I was already looking forward to building from the night for
Saturday.
Saturday was looking up. I felt better and even more comfortable than
the night before and was ready to race. The night however did not start very
good for me. After a 6th place start in
the Lites, I felt amazing in the 1st heat of the night, passing Friday
main event winner Sewell and 3rd place finisher Brown as I came through the pack. After passing for 2nd and putting my head
down for race leader Humphrey, a lapper crashed on the very last whoop, with me
already committed in 4th gear across the whoops very steep on this night, I had
no where to go except into his bike which shot me off towards the berm,
hanging off my bike that catapulted me into the concrete wall, almost
making it into the stands, leaving me look like a fly hitting a wall.
It was a very violent crash,
but thanks to have the Lord on my side, I walked away with just cuts and deep
bruises on my hands, leg and shoulder. I'd also like to thank Team Faith for
coming over and saying a Prayer thanking God for my safety and giving me enough
will power to compete for the rest of the night.
After the crash, I had to
remount and ride my AX class heat, it took me a few laps to loosing back up,
and was back in the game in the nick of time as I passed 3 riders in the last
two laps to get to 7th the last final qualifying spot to the main. I elected to
skip the Lites lcq and main, due to swelling of my hand in order to go for the
big money in the AX class.
To my surprise, especially
after my parade lap where I almost elected not to ride after feeling my hand
was to sore. I came of the gate well from the back row and came through 7th after
lap one and pushed up to 5th where I stayed for half the race battling with
Reynard for 4th and holding off AX points leader Chad Johnson, I raced as hard
as I could but faded with arm pump to an 8th place finish. Which I was very
satisfied after such a scary get off earlier in the night. I'm looking forward
to Pikeville in two weeks. I'll have a chance to relax, train, and prepare and
I hope to pull of some wins. See you in Kentucky.
